PRAGUE CASTLE around the year 1780
PRAGUE CASTLE around the year 1780
Reconstruction for the time around the year 1780.
(Made on the basis of an old illustration.)
Panorama of Prague Castle from the north over Deer Moat. The reconstruction shows us the form of the Prague Castle during the Rudolphine period to a large extent, because from this perspective, it has not changed much over the two centuries. The St. Vitus Cathedral with a big tower and the famous towers of St. George’s Convent rising above the rooftops remain to be the dominant features. We may be surprised by the fortress character of the Castle, surviving from the Middle Ages. On the left, there is still the Gothic fortification of Opyš Gate, the Black Tower, burgraviate roofs and the most famous tower, Daliborka (cylindrical, in the foreground). After falling out of use, the shooting galleries were transformed into tiny houses of the Golden Lane (between the Daliborka and the White Tower.) On the level of St. Vitus Cathedral, there is a line of buildings of the former St. George’s Convent with a short wing protruding into the former outer ward, and further a new priory, deanery and the massive cannon tower Mihulka. To its right at Vikárka, the Foundry, Gallery and the Spanish Hall can be seen. Buildings at the very back are already located at Hradčany Square. To the right of St. Vitus Cathedral, there are two cupolas of the Strahov Monastery in the background. In the greenery on the far right side, Prašný Bridge is hidden, with an entrance to the Castle from the northwest. Petřín with the St. Lawrence Church is on the far left side.
